New Orleans Watersports

New Orleans Watersports

Louisiana is not often pegged as an outdoor paradise since, well…we live in a swamp. But, do you know what swamps are great for? Watersports! Why not have some fun in our local environment with watersports in New Orleans and southern Louisiana? There are a multitude of activities that will have you exploring, relaxing, socializing, sweating – whatever it is you’re into!

Canoeing and Kayaking

Canoeing and kayaking are great activities for anyone who wants to relax or do something a little more exhilarating. There are a good deal of paddling options within the city, including Bayou Saint John, City Park, or Lake Pontchartrain. All are fantastic locations to cruise at your own pace and take in the views along the waterways. Outside of New Orleans, try the Bogue Falaya River or Cane Bayou on the Northshore. There are numerous locations to rent or buy kayaks and canoes, including Canoe and Trail, Masseys, or LOOP NOLA.

Paddleboarding

Similarly, paddleboarding is also a very popular water sport here in Louisiana. A bit different from a kayak or canoe, paddleboarding requires standing on a board with, you guessed it: a paddle. It’s a fantastic way to sightsee at a slower pace, while still being active on the water.

Fishing

Fishing is a way of life down here in New Orleans. There are countless fishing spots and tons of opportunities to catch a variety of aquatic life. Redfish, speckled trout, largemouth bass, and several species of catfish are just a few of the many fish varieties you can find down here. You can opt to take a private fishing tour, rent a boat, or just find a fishing pier. Joe Brown Park in New Orleans East offers lagoons that are regularly stocked, and City Park hosts a Bass Rodeo each year where anglers can compete in a fishing tournament.

Sailing

With Lake Pontchartrain so close, why not learn to sail? Boasting the second oldest yacht club in the country, Lake Pontchartrain has been a destination for sailors for the past 200 years. Sailing can be daunting, both in skill and in price, and there’s no better place to alleviate those fears than at Community Sailing New Orleans. Community Sailing offers programs for all people including kids, adults, women-only classes, veterans, people with disabilities, and more! Check out their website for a list of upcoming events and classes and go learn the ropes.

Swimming and Floating

And of course, you can always find a nearby spot to go swim and splash in the water. Fontainebleau State Park on the northshore has both a lakefront beach and a splash pad for younger children. If you don’t mind driving a little further, you could also check out some of the Mississippi Gulf Coast beaches or head up to Franklinton, LA for a tubing trip at Louisiana River Adventures. If you want to keep it close to home, check out the lists of NORDC indoor and outdoor pools and find their nearest available pool.

There are plenty of water sports around to stay cool this summer. No matter what your skill level or interests are, there is a water sport in New Orleans that's perfect for you. So don’t hesitate to grab some sunscreen and hit the water!
